PNG: Need a way around needlessly fat images

Hello,
J2ME newbie here. I was wondering if there is a way around the use of needlessly bloated 24 bit PNG images. They are absolutely killing me in terms of bloat for the kind of imagery I intend to create for handsets. I can get along just fine with lean 8-bit or 16-bit GIF images but J2ME does not support them. Help!
For my content PNG is at least five (5) times as large as an equivalent GIF image. Unngghh. Not good.

You can use 8-bit PNG images, which are usually slightly smaller than the equivalent GIF.
