syed,
I am the author of Core J2ME Technology and MIDP.
The book has received good comments from many readers:
Core J2ME Book at Amazon
If you would like a closer look, you can read the book online (partial contents) at:
Core J2ME book online
Feel free to visit my website, where you can read the back cover of the book, see an enhanced table of contents, and download the source code.
Book information at CoreJ2ME.com
The best way to choose a book (in my opinion) is to visit a book store, grab all the related books, and take some time to read a little from each. Typically it'll be clear which book you prefer.
Best of luck,
John Muchow

I recently bought John's book. I like it so far. The examples are easy to follow, and he explains them in enough detail to understand what is going on. I recommend this book for any J2ME beginner.
Also, check out answers when I asked this same question:
