I strongly recommend Apress's book "Wireless Java" by Jonathan Knudsen. It taught me how to program J2ME very quickly and was easy to read.

I am learning J2ME from John Muchow's Core J2ME Technology. There are several other books about J2ME as well. Check your favorite on-line book store (such as Amazon.com) for more recommendations and reviews for such books.

I also would recommend checking out "Wirless Java: Developing with Java 2 Micro Edition" by Knudsen. This book has everything you'll need to get off and running with J2ME and will probably be the only J2ME book you'll ever need to reference.
