Does anyone know what cellular providers or other distribution channels support MIDP 2.0 at this point? Is MIDP 2.0 something that will become standard in the near future?

I don't think MIDP 2.0 will be the standard very soon. Looking at one of the most advanced cellphones the Sony Ericson P800, it doesn't support MIDP 2.0. I should focus on MIDP 1.0, but remember the MIDP 2.0. One never knows what the near future will bring us.

Well, if MIDP v1.0 is sufficient for your app, then you should definitely use v1.0. But for many of us, MIDP v1.0 is such a compromised spec (hint: a major vendor in the MIDP expert group was not ready for "advanced features" in 2000 and pushed to take out some core features from the spec). I think most vendors will have MIDP v2.0 phones by the end of this year:

Also, Symbian OS has made a major commitment to future MIDP and related specifications (hint: They are moving from PersonalJava to MIDP! What about the Personal Profile?) If you cannot wait, there are MIDP v2.0 VMs already available on the PocketPC platform (Jeode).
cheers

Take a look:
"Current estimates are that MIDP 2.0 devices will
be available in large volumes in Summer 2003"

Devices should be available by the Autumn (fall). Nokia stated roadmap backs this up. Currently MIDP 1.0 is all that is available
