Hi !
I was asked this weird question in an interview.
Which is subset of another, profile or configuration. I told them that their question does not make much sense as none is a subset of the other. So do you think my answer was correct ?

From Knudsen's book, Wireless Java:
A configuration specifies a JVM and some set of core API's for a specific family of devices.
A profile is layered on top of a configuration, adding the API's and specifications necessary to develop applications for a specific family of devices.

With that in mind I would say a configuration is a subset of a profile since a profile seems to be the "added" API's and specifications on top of the configuration.

This is not the definition of "subset". You can say J2SE is a "subset" of J2EE. But you can only say that profiles "depend" on configurations. I think it was a very badly phrased question.

The real question is:
did you get the job?
Or
did they say - we are not too keen on people who tell us our questions don't make sense!!!

A course in office politics would do well.
How to kiss ones but and call him stupid at the same time and get a "attaboy" from him. Now thats an employee destined for greatness

J2ME and PersonalJava are subsets of J2SE whereas J2SE is not a subset of J2EE..
The quesiton is asked because in Personal Java and J2ME you use classes that are the same from the parent set of Java pis ie J2SE and in some casses you use ones that are different from J2se..one of the basic skills and understanding of doign java development on mobile devices!
