What are the major differences between MIDP1.0 for PDAs and the change to using profiles in MIDP2.0 for pda programming?

There aren't specific features in MIDP 2.0 for PDAs, so the new features in MIDP 2.0 are the same across all platforms.
By "new profiles", do you mean the optional packages for PDAs? They are the only PDA-specific APIs in J2ME so far. They are the PIM and file connection packages, which enable access to the PIM functions of the PDA and its file system.
If you want more information about them, have a look at the specification at http://www.jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=75.

I have the feeling that the PDA OP is too little too late. It would be great if it were released on time two years ago. But now, most PDAs are powerful enough to run the Personal Profile or even J2SE. There is little need for the PDA OP. It could be good for mid-range PDA-phone though.
