if I have a compact flash GPS receiver attached to a pocketPC, and the receiver is outputting NMEA messages, what api do I need to read the data if i have a j2me application running on the pocketPC?

There is a Location API in the works (a JSR), but I don't think there are any implementations available to date. You should probably search the vendor's documentation for any clues. If you're lucky, you'll find a C++ API. If you're really lucky, you'll find a proprietary Java API.
I hope someone else chimes in at this point because I'm a bit "out" of the mobile scene right now...
