The "Image Part" of a List object in Palm OS

I have what might be a simple question, but I can't find any documentation that references the behavior I'm seeing. I have a List screen which I add an "Image part" and a "String part" using the append( String, Image ) method. But when the item is displayed in the List, the icon shows the default icon, not the one I defined. Now, I know the icon is loading properly because I set up an Alert dialog with the same image inserted as the image in the dialog, and this works beautifully. Is there something I'm missing here? For example, do the PNG files have to be a certain type of PNG (PNG-8 for example) to be displayed in a List item?
Please, someone help me with my frustration. . .
