I have been looking at Java's equivalent configuration and profile for devices with capability to run .NET Compact Framework.

MIDP 2.0/CLDC 1.1 seems to be constrained when compared to the .NET Compact Framework, or am I wrong ?

If I have to target devices that are capable of running the .NET CF, what flavor of Java should I choose? Will J2ME Personal Profile provide an equivalent set of features/capabilities as the .NET CF?

If you have a higher end handheld, then the best to run would be the CDC profiles like Personal Profile, or the older Personal Java. Devices with the PP/PBP profiles pre-installed are coming out very soon from Nokia, Palm (?), and maybe other partners of IBM like RIM (although they seem to be very happy with MIDP).

Some available JVMs:

and a mailing list for CDC:

this thread is interesting:

In short, yes, Personal Profile targets the same type of devices as the .Net CF. However, on Pocket PC, the PP implementations have been limited to a niche market (specialized enterprise apps) due to its lack of access to native APIs (no address book integration, for example). CF provides a *much better* experience on PPC.

I should add that NET.CF appears more wise versus the cdc platform but on the cldc platform as of version 1.1 we get access to native apis via a subset of JNI

I wonder if CDC1.1 will follow the same path?
