Is there a way of discovering the details of a phone that connects to a server. Details like series and development platform?

You can get some idea from the User-Agent HTTP header sent by the phone's WAP browser / HttpConnection implementation. For example, for Nokia 6610 the header value would be something like "Nokia6610/1.0 (...)".

If the client connecting to your server is a Midlet written by you, you could make it send the necessary details as custom HTTP headers like "X-screen-width", "X-screen-height", "X-foobar", etc.

I want the midlet to get the phones details and use them in the application. I know you can get the height and width of the screen but what about the colour depth and midp version? I don't want the server to do this, I want the midlet to do it.

Ok. Here are some "properties" you could dig up in your Midlet:
