I've just completed my first serious J2ME application: PocketMetro 2.0. It's a travel guide for various public transportation network, like the London's Tube and the Paris' Metro.

Of course, it works in every emulator I've tried, and in my N-Gage, but I'm quite wary that it will misbehave in other phones. So, if you have a J2ME phone, could you check out PocketMetro 2.0 at www.clocklabs.com? You can also download trial versions from the WAP site (wap.clocklabs.com), directly to your mobile phone.

The trial versions are limited to 5 uses, but if you drop me an email at [e-mail] , I would gladly send you an URL where you can download a fully-functional version.

What is your jar size? We have all kinds of J2ME enabled phones, which have different of download size limits.

I'm struggling to down size an app to meet 64k download limit right now.

Well, Jar size is not an issue for our application. Since we knew that the size of the dataset was going to be a problem (because of the limitations of both the phones and the carriers), we optimized the structure of the data file in order to minimize their size.

On average, the size of the PocketMetro 2.0 Jar is between 30K and 35K bytes. For example, the map for Paris' Metro fits in 7400 bytes, compressed. I guess that a complete map of London's network (tube + light rail) would easily fit in 64K. Finally, PocketMetro uses very little graphics, which does help.

just checked your application for Paris! Looks nice.
A funny thing: If I wanna go from Pereire to Denfert-Rochereau it proposes one solution and if I switch destinations it proposes something else! Thourh both solutions are correct it's a bit odd, isn't it?

First, I'd like to thank you for trying out PocketMetro 2.0. May I ask you about your phone ?

Second, to answer your question, I'd say that path-finding is not an exact science, especially on such small devices: there is just too many variables. Still, your sample strikes me as a bit odd. Both suggested road are sensible, but they should be identical in both directions. I will look into it. Thanks for pointing this out.
