I'm trying to figure out a way of sending data to a mobile phone without using SMS. Initially, I tought it would be possible to use the pushregistry function for this, but it seems to be other related problems.

This is what I'm trying to archive:
1. Send a login-request to the server(containing for instance IPadress and phonenumber). This works.
2. At a later point, the server need to send data to the phone.

The problem is - how do I know where to send the data? In step 1 above, I assume that the IP-address I received was an IP address to the operator's firewall or router. Is it possible at all to send data to the phone?

The only solution I can come up with, is that the phone uses a timer-based poll to the server (with pushregistry), but then this would be a waste of resources. Also - using this method - will I have to start the entire application GUI doing this? In this case, I want this poll to be executed in the background and the application GUI should only be launched if there are any new data available to the phone.

Is there any smart soul out there that has a solution to this problem?
