How does networking 'work' in J2ME?

I'm just getting started with J2ME so I may not have phrased the question corretly.

I realize that the J2ME API provides http connectivity, allowing a cell phone to communicate with some server using http. However, my question is, over what medium is the connection being made? The way I understand it, please correct me if I'm wrong, is that when a J2ME app is connected to the internet it is connected throught the user's cell phone provider. So, in short, the connection is made over the same connection a call is made but it's streaming data instead of voice data (ok, that's data too).

I hope this is somewhat clear. Thanks!

Richard,

someone else here may be able to explain this better or at least more gracefully [ ;-) ] than myself, but here's how I understand it..

The API says that if the device is going to implement midp2.0 then it must be able to obtain a httpconnection, but the midp spec does not care how that is achieved.

The wireless carier on which your midp device runs, can implement HTTP on top of whatever protocol it likes.. from what I've read the most typical set up would be that the wireless carrier implements HTTP connections to/from your device via a gateway, which acts as a proxy between the device & the remote HTTP server.

hope that helps - but if anyone has a more complete explanation I would like to read it myself too, cheers.

Thanks, Mark. That's kind of what I figured. What's done under covers is kept hidden, in - wink, wink - classic Java style. So, basically I shouldn't worry about it. I'm still try to get up to speed on the whole J2ME mindset. Thanks again.
