this might be the wrong place to ask this question. I am interested in writing java programs for pda's pocketpc, palm. Is this possible with java, and if so where is a good place to start and what do i need to get started.

Yes you may download some of the tools and docs from Sun. If you want to develop for the Palm platform you may download tools and docs here. Other than that you may search this forum for some important topics that may help you to get started. Happi coding !
