Expecting 2 softkeys to be present on devices

MIDP spec provides the idea of mapping commands to softkeys. Can I expect that "most" devices have 2 softkeys and ignore the rest? Or is it a better design to take into account even the phone implementations with one softkey only, like some Nokia phones that have only "Options" softkey.

Is it common to have hyperlink/buttons within the screen for such? If I have to program in MIDP1.0 only, what's a good way to do this? StringItem appearance modes seem to be a MIDP2.0 feature! And items cann't have commands like in MIDP2.0.

Thanks in advance...

When it comes to J2ME devices, you cannot assume anything, that is why it is the responsibility of the device to determine how it lays out High Level UI Api components. If left to Java then it would not be able to write once run anywhere because on some devices it wouldn't fit, etc.

J2ME Polish has some good UI to help better "control" you Commands, so to speak.
