I attended a great session at the Boulder visual studio users group where the speaker demonstrated "Hello World" for a distributed mobile phone app using approximately 5 different development environments. He did them live and I was very impressed.

Unfortunately, he was rather biased in favor of Microsoft's Visual Studio and did not have anything good to say about J2ME.

I tried to point out that since he paid a lot more $ for Microsoft Visual studio than he did for J2ME (which was free) it was no surprise that it was much much easier to develope with Microsoft visual studio. No one I know of sends Bill $ because he is a charity case.

Having just purchased a programmable smart phone can I assume that the speaker is correct in saying that just using the free J2ME (and friends) makes mobile app development very tedious?

Can I assume that there are some comparable J2ME alternatives to Microsoft Visual Studio that make Mobile App development less tedious? What might they be?

Thanks,
siegfried

I'm kinda new to J2ME but I find that NetBeans with the Mobility Pack is very user friendly & quite intuitive. It takes a little long to load, but I think it's worth it.

I will actually agree with the speaker that it is much easier to make a quick and pretty applicaiton in VS for Mobile Devices than it does in J2ME.

But, I would also argue that there are way more devices that run J2ME than Microsoft Mobile application code.
