I Am writing an application where a MIDlet talk's to a web server using HTTP protocol.

Is it necessary to have WAP gateway between server & mobile phone?

I guess WAP gateway is required only when we browse internet through mobile phone(using WML, WSP protocol).

It depends entirely on what you're trying to do, I suppose.

It's not, in theory, necessary to have a WAP gateway between the server and mobile phone, since WML pages are going to come via HTTP anyway. You might set up a translation gateway if you're going to be using something that's fairly intensive on the HTML side, but I don't know how much that's really practical anymore (or if you'd just be better served through finding another means).

It may be required by some manufacturers (I once needed that for Motorola devices - to configure the so called Web sessions and MMS messaging).

At the time I used Kannel - http://kannel.org - note: Kannel site seems to be offline at the moment.
