Hi ,

I am a final year student doing my degree in Computing Specialized in Software Engineering. My final year project is a Mobile application which provides location based information services. Basically this application will be allow the application user to locate himself first and locate important places around him such as hospitals, restaurants and etc. So I am planning to locate the user using GPS(Global Positioning System). In addition I am planning to use the location API in java. To show the important places to the user I thought of using maps. I will have to make use of maps of only one city.

What i want to know is how to (the best way to) process, display and store maps. Hope you will give a good response. Thank you in advance.

Well in the real world, we load the Google Maps mobile app and let them do it.

However for educational purposes, you can store maps as graphic images, use the GPS api to get your position, then render the map image with any generated graphics you want to overlay on it.

If your mobile device has internet access, it might be worth to take a look at openstreetmap to get data like restaurants, hospitals and such.

This way you don't have to store too much maps, but just retrieve and display
