Well, I found some code here, but when I tried
it I had troubles... http://www.sys-con.com/java/source/3-2/34.htm
One client can connect okay, but when I try a second
one it hangs waiting to enter the synchronized ThreadPoolManager.start method.
Anybody know why?

"preethi",
The Java Ranch has thousands of visitors every week, many with surprisingly similar names. To avoid confusion we have a naming convention, described at http://www.javaranch.com/name.jsp . We require names to have at least two words, separated by a space, and strongly recommend that you use your full real name. Please log in with a new name which meets the requirements.
Thanks.

Dear sheriff,

I apologize, however I was unaware of this policy. I
remember seeing a notice that I must agree to the rules, but
to be honest I just assumed the rules were no profanity, being
mean etcetra. The naming convention for the user handles is
not very common, perhaps if this were advertised more
clearly when a user is registering it wouldn't be such a big
problem. Also, it seems like it wouldn't be that difficult
to add some code to check if the username entered has a space
in it or not. Just a suggestion. I apologize again.
Thanks,
Will

Well I apologize again. When I went to re-register, this time
I noticed that it is pretty clearly marked. I guess it's just
not something people generally expect.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
