When we bounce an application server, is there a guarantee that all threads - some application spawned threads are also present - would be stopped i.e after the server bounce would the old thread continue to run ?Is that guaranteed by J2EE spec, is it server dependent ?

Depends on what you mean by "bouncing" the server. For most administrators, "bouncing" means stopping the process, ie. exiting the JVM. And then restarting the Java process, ie. restarting the application server.

No process specific resources -- threads, memory, opened files, opened sockets, etc. survives when a process is terminated.
