Debugging an applet

How do you debug an applet. Specifically using KAWA or Netbeans IDE, rather than from the command line which I avoid like the plague. I don't know how to do it from there either though.
No problem debugging applications but applets are different animals, you don't start the applet but rather use the html file so how does debgger intercept execution for you?
With AS/400 there was Start Serve Job which debugged a remote job and I suppuse it is something similar but I can't find the answer?
