Hi, is validate() a method of AppletContext or AppletStub? What does it do?

Neither.
validate() is a method of Container. It overrides the validate() method in Component.
According to the Java Specs:

public void validate()
Validates this container and all of its subcomponents.
AWT uses validate to cause a container to lay out its subcomponents again after the components it contains have been added to or modified.

Hope this helps.
