Must the JFrame always open a separate Java Applet Window?

Can a JFrame be positioned directly on an HTML page and not always open the Java Applet Window? Adding components to the plain JApplet content pane doesn't open the separate window.
The reason why I need to do this is that I have a drag and drop application using the JTree which works just fine inside the Java Applet Window but fails to recognize DnD events on the plain old JApplet content pane...
Boss wants a fixed Tree sitting on a page...
Is there possibly a way to fill the browser window with the Java Applet Viewer (that might appease him)...
