I kinda heard one of my professors say so the other day. But I did not find anything about it from suned.sun.com. Is it a slip of tongue of my professor or do they really have such an exam?

There is no such exam. The label "Certified Sun Instructor" isn't really a formal title either, but Sun does certify the people who teach their courses through practical evaluation (observation, evaluated teaches, sometimes knowledge tests).
In the coming year, Sun will require that instructors who teach their entry courses like SL-275 be SCJP's.

so, basically, we just need to pass the scjp exam in order to be a so-called java instructor?

nope, passing scjp only mean you passed and have the certification for SCJP.
Michael is right about "Sun does certify the people who teach their courses through practical evaluation (observation, evaluated teaches, sometimes knowledge tests)."
I think there is a program in Sun education Training course that you need to take. I am not sure, check www.sun.com. But passing SCJP is NOT enough.
