Is long narrower than float and double??

  • byte = 8 bits
  • short = 16 bits
  • int = 32 bits
  • long = 64 bits
  • float = 32 bits
  • double = 64 bits

    Yes!!!
    Though it may sound a bit strange, a long can be implicitly converted to float or doube. Of course, there's a loss of precision in it, but JLS says it is valid.

    The logic behind the long->float promotion is that within a float, you can represent the order of magnitude of *every* possible long, although at the cost of some precision if you have a very big long.
    i.e, Long.MAX_VALUE = 9223372036854775807
    (float) Long.MAX_VALUE = 9.223372e18
