I found Marcus Green's tutorial on shifting pretty good.
www.jchq.net Chances are that you'll get 1-2 questions in the exam exclusively on shifting... max so don't loose too much sleep on the subject! One tip I can think of is to start thinking in groups of bits eg 8 groups of 4 1/0s for integers, 2 groups of 4 for bytes etc do the decimal-binary conversion, and write down the problem in these groupings.
Also you may want to do a search through this board for specific questions on bit-shifting asit comes up regularly
