Hi, I plan to take the exam somewhere in May. Can I register for the exam now and then take it at a later date? Are the exams held everynow and then or is it held only on certain days every month?

Sun doesn't actually administer the test. You buy a voucher from them, but you actually find a local testing center that gives the test.
As for when/where, you'll have to find your local testing center and find out from them when they offer the test. You can probably get information about local testing centers from Sun.

I already bought my Exam voucher. I was told by SUN HQ that I just need to notify the exam center 48hrs in advanced to take my test
Don't worry, you don't need to set up the exam date before hand, and I believe you have up to 1 year to make the decission.

The voucher has an expiring date. (That's probably no news...). But I know people having a voucher expiring before they could or want to take the test. They booked the exam on time and then kept on postponing it till they were ready. Just a tip.

I wouldn't do that. Only schedule your exam once you are ready and not before otherwise you may be unnecessarly stressed towards the end if you don't manage to finish your study on time.

As far as I know, you can take the exam anywhen so you don't have to worry.

I am trying to buy the 'Java SE 17 Developer | 1Z0-829 exam, and I am having some trouble understanding the process

• After adding the exam to the cart and making the payment, is the exam valid for 6 months only?
• Do I have to take the exam from home or from the test center?
• Should I use "OCP Oracle Certified Professional Java SE 17 Developer (Exam 1Z0-829) Programmer's Guide (Oracle Press for Java) by Khalid Mughal (Author),
Vasily Strelnikov (Author)" to prepare for the exam?
OCP Oracle Certified Professional Java SE 17 Developer (Exam 1Z0-829) Programmer's Guide
• Do I have to give OCA before attempting OCP?

Yes, only 6 months.
Can do either virtual exam from home (need a webcam and good internet connection) or a test center.
Test centers are harder to schedule as they fill up soon.
On the other hand, at home, you will not be allowed to use a rough/scratch pad.
I highly recommend Boyarsky and Selikoff's book for OCP17. It is wonderful. I am using it for my preparation.
There is no prerequisite requirement for OCP
