I am using RHE book as my main preparation for the programmer certification.
I would like to know when the new 1.4 exam is likely to come into force and when the current SCJP2 exam will be killed off.
I hope to sit for the exam in a couple of months time and don't know which objectives to follow.
Apparently the 1.4 exam drops awt and io - this is 5 of the 14 chapters in RHE book!!!
This is 35% of the content.
With much less topics to master is the 1.4 exam significantly easier than the old exam.
Should I skip the chapters in the book and skip these questions in the various mock exams or should I study them and hope I will be ready in time to sit the old exam before it is axed?

Having just sat the beta exam, although awt and io are no more, that just means that Sun can allocate more questions to difficult topics like threads.
So please dont assume that the 1.4 exam will be easier. You may not have to know all the methods for API x, but you will have to know the basic syntax greater than ever before.
Cheers,
Mark

So would it be fair to say that a book like RHE no longer covers the remaining topic in enough depth as is need for the new 1.4 exam.
I have just finished reading the chapter on threads, for instance, and this seem to be a very basic coverage.

I am amazed that Sun dropped IO from the certification.

Jealous of Michael's obviously superior talents they have published without him. No doubt the book will be merely a shell of RHE.

this is 5 of the 14 chapters in RHE book!!!

No chapters 8-13. Chapters 6 and 7 are important, and chapter 14 starts SCJD.

Studying for the programmer exam is HARD enough, without the confussion surrounding its transition to the new 1.4 format.

No Kel,
You must READ EVERY PAGE OF THAT BOOK. That is what I had to you and you MUST do the same
Did I mention I'm taking the 1.4 beta exam today? I read a lot of stuff that won't even be covered on the 1.4 exam. I'm thinking about taking the 1.3 exam since there sounds like there is a lot of ambuguity on the 1.4 test.
Cheers,
Ryan

I will read it ALL. Chances are I will sit the 1.3 exam anyway.
Good luck with your exam. Post your results on javaranch.

Guys, two questions:
1o.) I'm also studying with the RHE book. Does it have answers for the tests at the end of every chapter? I can't find them...
2o.) This is urgent: How do I sign up or subscribe to get a date and place to take the exam? I'm in sydney, AU
thanks

The answers section is at the end of the chapter section. You should be able to find it.

If you got a voucher from Sun for the beta exam call the numbers for the regional prometric centres, given in the email you might have received. If not beta, you will have to wait for sometime to take SCJP for 1.4.

Im going to the test tomorrow(05/23), does it count as a official certification? Or will I still have to do the 1.3 SCPJ2?
Please help me,
Francisco

If you pass, you will be SCJP certified. You will not need to take the 1.3 version.

but isnt a bit unfair to the people that payed $150 to get the certification? Aonther thing, does anybody knows if there will be questions about logging or regular expressions?
Thanks,

Why is it unfair? The test normally costs money. There's a brief period of time that they're testing this new beta version. In exchange for helping Sun out by taking the Beta test, they let you use it towards your certification if you pass.
This is no different than when a publisher gives out a copy of its book to JavaRanch, so someone can write a book review. In exchange for the free book, someone has to spend time and effort to write a review of it. But would you say "that's not fair to the people that buy the book?"

What's this answer sheet? If you mean answers to the Qs of 1.4 exam, then aren't u violating the NDA?

Manish - I am fairly sure that he was joking.
Even SUN doesn't really have an answer sheet created yet - they don't know which of these questions that they are going to toss.
In addition from these responses, I think that we can be fairly sure that they scramble the order of the questions for each tester.
Bob - be nice and fess up. Someone will actually BELIEVE you if you don't put a wink after such a statement.

unfair?? What is not fair? You have your chance to register for it right? And it is beta, 161 question + 4 hours with no passing score set.
what is not fair?

Okay, the stuff about the answer sheet for the scjp1.4 exam (see above). I can categorically tell you, without fear of contradiction, i was joking. But how many people have mailed me for a copy of it? Only about a dozen people.
What's wrong with you people, don't you want to pass the exam with flying colours?

I took the btea exam last Friday. No AWT questions. Only assert feature has been tested in 4 hours exam time. Lots of questions are about wrapper classes and string class. I think that it's not a hard exam.
BTW MCSD is even easier to this.

Hmmmm,
I think, I need to read it a bit slowly, so that I could be a little more sensible
I guess, I am just a bit too sensitive abt this issue, even a small request of such type (question or answer) annoys me. My mistake, really!!!
