"Mens play with cars.Womens play with babies " - Balaji Loganathan

I find this annoying. Whether or not I find the opinion offensive may be irrelevant, but it isn't the 'nice'-est thing to have to read while searching for Java help. And isn't being 'nice' one of Javaranch's conditions?

Yes, I know the hokey name violates Javaranch's rules and doesn't disguise me much ...

Well, I find all the sigs annoying. When a rancher makes multiple posts in a thread, I am always tempted to ask "Didn't you say that already?" (whatever it is in the signature). The sigs are especially annoying when their size exceeds that of the actual post. I perceive the sigs as a way for a poster to say, "I don't have much to contribute to the discussion, but isn't what follows my name cute?"

I can see why some people might find Balaji's signature distasteful. I think, however, that a private message might be a more appropriate means of addressing this concern (maybe you did that already?).

Remember that attitudes to women are quite different in other parts of the world than they are in the US or UK (where I'm from). The remark is clearly meant in jest even if it doesn't appeal to your sense of humour (it doesn't appeal to mine either).

There are far more irritating things on the site IMO, such as posts littered with text message style abbreviations, careless typos and illegible code, but we have to put up with those for the greater good. JavaRanch is a great site.

I also agree, to a certain extent, with John about signatures although I myself am one of the offenders. I think they allow Ranchers to show a hint of their personality (whether it appeals to you or not), which is important as we can't do that through our display names. Having said that I think a signature of more than two or three lines is overkill, and it would be nice if the "Show Signature" option was off by default, at least for the second and subsequent posts in any thread.

Anyway, that's my opinion, which I'm growing ever fonder of giving. Thanks for listening!

Anonymous Whinger,

So in an attempt to point out another's flaw, you blatently, as you stated, break a Javaranch rule to do so.

Jules is right in that sending the member a Private Message or email is the best solution in this case. I would just add that you could have at least made your complaint as yourself. Anonymous complaints don't carey too much weight with me. [Edited to remove Javaranch general view and changed to my personal view.]

Oh, and just to be fair...

We don't have too many rules around here but we do have a Naming Policy. Please adjust your display name accordingly.

Thanks.

So... this may go against what Gregg said, but I understand the desire to be anonymous. Sometimes... you don't want everyone else knowing that you were the one that complained about __whatever__. I agree that a personal message sent directly to the person in question may have been more tactful, but on the other hand I guess "anonymous" wanted to see if anyone else found it offensive.

As for having signatures at all -- on the whole I like them, it gives people a chance to have a little bit of personality shine through. Yes its annoying when people have massive signatures that make no sense (personally it cracks me up when the signature lists a boat load of certifications and the person asks an incredibly simple question -- really makes you wonder about the quality of their cert ). I always think about if I want my signature to show on a given post... and usually remove it if its just a one-liner reply.

On that note then, don't create a bogus account. Just post a message without logging in to Javaranch.

Thanks Gregg!..

Anonymous Whinger, it would have been more polite if you would have sent me a private message than posting here and wasting others time.
Anyway I removed the signature. I didn't mean it to hurt or insult womens feelings. Its just a funny joke and nothing more than that. I respect womens feelings, which i don't have to prove anyway.

If you have an issue with one person, it is best to talk to that person first.

If you have a general issue, it is best to avoid naming any particular person.

The plural for man is men and woman is women.
Unless that was part of the joke.
