Hi there:
Is work experience neccessary for successfully passing this exam. Can someone simply go through books, take mock test, write short programs to test specific behaviors and learn enough to pass the exam..
Thanks

Seems that way...in some cases.
In others there is an enormous amount of previous
exposure to professional programming.
For example, there is some guy around here who has been programming in an object oriented way using C (not C++) since the middle 80's, or before, and got 100% in SCJP after a few weeks, but he still had to work at it.
Me? I have written a few Java programs which are in
production, nothing great. SCJP? I got the voucher...

Work experience is not necessary, you could work for a couple of years and still not cover all the topics covered by the exam. However it is really important to write lots of short programs of your own, because most people learn by doing and writing short programs is one of the best forms of "doing".
