How can anonymous class extend any other class? Can it be done explicitly?

The following code shows how to go about making an anonymous class extend any other class.

//superclass A
class A {
   public void doSomething() {
      System.out.println("A");
   }
}
public class Test {
   public static void main(String[] args) {
      //declaration of the anonymous extension of superclass A
      A a = new A() {
         // overridden version of doSomething
         public void doSomething() {
            System.out.println("anonymous extension of A");
            //invoke superclass' doSomething method
            super.doSomething();
         }
      };
      //do some stuff
      a.doSomething();
   }
}

The output is
anonymous extension of A
A

You can't do it explicitly using the extends keyword

It is strictly prohibited to use the "extends" and "implements" keywords in an anonymous class declaration.
