To all of you 'legal-eagles' -
Thanks for your sharp eyes and minds, and for your questions! We will try to answer as many of the JavaRanch posts as we can, but we are under a tight deadline to finish our next Java book.
We love it when someone jumps in and answers these questions, AND we really want to find all of the problems in the book that we can! So, if anyone asks a question on this forum and it seems to be a real problem in the book, please send us an email !
Hmmm... let me try this again... we might not always log in to JavaRanch and keep track of every thread, so when it turns out that there is a real problem with the book, PLEASE send us an email. (If you're into this kind of thing, we give credit to everyone who spots a problem in the book).
This way we won't miss anything, and we'll have the best possible book!
Thanks !
Bert and Kathy
p.s. We will update our errata page frequently, and you can find it on www.wickedlysmart.com

But Bert, you're missing the point here - our goal is to get you so used to checking JavaRanch for useful feedback, that you become an addict like the rest of us and hang out here all the time.

Man oh man, it really is addictive!
We've been going to our JRA 12-step meetings, we've admitted that we're powerless...

Hi,
Just picked your book up last night.
The errata pg. has unreadable characters:
http://www.wickedlysmart.com/StudyGuide/StudyGuideIndex.html

Now, I found something that I wanted to report but didn't find the email/link for reporting it:

(pg. 499)
Be sure you remember the following: You start a Thread, not a Runnable. You call start() on a Thread instance, not a Runnable instance.

A Runnable instance? Are you sure?
Just below that in the exam watch section,

The CD only works on Windows! Sorry, but this is not acceptable for a Java book. I don't have Windows; I can't afford it. This should be added to the top of the errata list.

Garrett -
Believe me, I'm no fan of Windows or MicroSoft, (personally, I'm of the opinion that operating systems ought to actually operate  ). You might be happy to know that the book was written on Macs.
Let me address your concerns:
- On the current errata page some browsers can't handle the double quotes that were used. This problem will be fixed in the next few days when we update the errata.
- We wish the CD worked on non-Windows operating systems, believe me! If you want to help change the world, write to the publisher - we could use your help !
-We will look into the issue you raised!
Thanks for your input!
-Bert

HA - its those damned Microsoft Word "smart quotes" I bet. I finally figured out that you have to save as plain text and enable character replacement to get rid of the damn things. (There are also "smart" apostrophes - ugh)
As far as running only on Windows, I agree thats a real pain. I used Java applets for mock exams in one book, but for the upcoming Java Exam Cram CD, the publisher has a deal with another test engine company that only runs on Windows. My apologies in advance but thats the publishers choice.

Ok, I'll complain to the publisher about it. Do you have a specific email address I should write to or should I look through the book?
Some quote marks that can be used:
