I am wondering if it really matters what percent I get on my exam. Is there anything in the certification kit that distinguishes somebody who barely scraped by with a 52% from Mr. Java who passes with over 90%?

Nope, the percentage is not indicated on the certificate

Then is there some way for a prospective employer to verify you actually got the percentage you stated on your resume?

The score is mentioned on the score report that you get just after the exam. Secondly the result is also available on the net and the employer may ask you to show the result in front of him. But there is nothing on the certificate that shows how much you scored.

Sun must have had some reason to decide on 52% as the passing score. If it's good enough for them its good enough for me !!
