Hi Jyotisree
You may appreciate reading the javaranch's FAQ for SCJP.

Hi Jyotisree

Well it really depends upon you. Personally I have taken the 1.4 exam and I guess most of the people also take the same(guessing by the no. of posts for 1.4 material and 1.2 material).
The 1.4 exam is new and secondly, personally I feel that it has less no. of objectives to study. That is the course to study is less.

Just take 1.4 exam and forget 1.2!

Well, i bought quite a bit of stuff (books, CDs, etc) for the Java 1.2 exam a while back. But never had the time to study properly for the exam and now 1.4 has come out.
But since all my stuff is on 1.2, I'll just take 1.2 rather than spend more $$ upgrading my study material.

But then again ...
Since SCJP 1.4 is a subset of SCJP 1.2, would I be able to take the SCJP 1.4 exam based on what I study from my SCJP 1.2 study materials ?

That's exactly what I did... Basically skip the chapters that have to deal with I/O and AWT and find some extra Assertions study material on the web.
Check out this information provided by Khalid and Rasmussen in order to prepare for the 1.4 exam if you are using their 1.2 book.
