need help with the modulo

Dear all
I would be most grateful if someone could give the logic behind the modulo operator, I do not understand why I get the out that I get.
The output I get is 1 How comes?

int firstInt = 10;
int secondInt = 3;

int myResult = firstInt % secondInt;
System.out.println(myResult);
}

Welcome to javaranch
Going back to my old days of high school, this is how I learned it:
it's 10 divided by 3, so the remaining is the module

10 | 3
    -------
 1 | 3 

3 * 3 = 9
10 - 9 = 1
so 1 is the remaining.

I did find this out before hand.
I only was stuck on it as in england the % operator means precentage, and that was what I was use to.
