Welcome to JavaRanch.com, Dimple! How long it takes to prepare for SCJP, depends on a few factors besides dedication: your Java background, resources availability (Internet, books), and how high you want to score.
On average, if you're not entirely new to Java, willing to buy a good cert guide (Kathy & Bert for instance), willing to actively participate in this forum, able to set aside 3 hr daily for studies, and wishing to score 70-80%, then I guess 2 months should be enough. However, you might read touching success stories on this forum about some bright persons whom it took just "a couple of nights" to cram thru the objectives and score above 90. It happens as well.

thanks Vad
to begin with i just ordered for Kathy & Bert's book, have good access to internet resources, i do have java experience ( that's the only exp i have ) & yes, i really want a great score.
earlier i was thinking abt a month, but now i think its better to be thinking abt how well i can do in 2 months. i guess i'll go with that.
thank you so much for helping me figure this out.
