Has anyone ever bought and used the CD from Sun for the "Java Programming Language" ? This is course SL-275.
Did it actually help you prepare for the exam ? Sun tells me that this is all you need to study for the exam to pass it. The CD will end up costing me $ 500 (Canadian) if I did buy it.
I just wanted to ask if anyone here went out and bought it and how you found it. I am not wokring right now as a Java programmer but want to get myself certified as one and want to go about doing that.
I'd appreciate any feedback you guys can give.
Thank you.
Edwin

$500 CAD sounds like a whole lot of money. I don't believe it'll make you James Gosling if you're not him already.
Get a good certification guide, set aside an hour or so a day for a couple of months, partcipate in the forum discussions, and you'll get there.

Hello Edwin. I havent used the CD but I think its expensive as there are other good alternatives to getting yourself certified. I'm also preparing for the SCJP 1.4 certification and I'm using Kathy Sierra and Bert Bate's book, "Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2". Another good book is Java Certification Second Edition by Khalid Mughal and Rolf Rasmussen. There also tons of free mock exams you can try out before taking the exam. If you've got bucks to burn there are commercial mock exam products as well. You may find this link useful: Certification Resources

Hi Dennis,
How is your preparation for SCJP? I am planning to do it soon too. Mind to share your tips with me?
BTW, Dennis is right. Those 2 books he recommended are top-notch. (I'm not trying to apple polish the authors, it is the fact).

Hi CH. I'm following Cathy Song's tip.
Cathy Song's Tip
Right now, i'm doing a lot of reading on Kathy and Bert's book. Sometimes I read Khalid's book too for some topics that I feel I need to learn more. I dont have much experience in Java so I try get as much info as I can.
After I've gone through the SCJP objectives I'm planning to try as much mock exams I can. You may want to visit this URL:
Mock Exams and other Resources
Since I'm not certified yet, you may want to get advises and recommendations from those who have already passed. I visit the Sun certification results forum and get tips and experiences of those who passed.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi Edwin,
I audited SL-275 and Kathy used to teach it. It's not a bad course, but it's not really geared towards studying for the SCJP exam. Sun considers SL-275 to be the class that most closely maps to the SCJP certification, but it is NOT all you need. SL-275 skips a lot of the topics covered in the exam. In short, I think that if your intention is to study for the SCJP, don't use the SL-275 CD.
Good luck!
Bert

I totally agree with Bert, i took the SL-275 course and it is definitly NOT all you need. And it didn't come with any CD. Maybe becasue i took it a long time ago... I don't know.
I found also that the K&B Book is more informative that the SUN cource itself. i suggest you go ahead and buy one if you wish to achieve a good score.

I think what I will end up doing is getting "Just Java 2" and Kathy and Bert's book. Thank you all for your replies to my question. I never did feel like spending $ 500 on Sun's SL-275 CD.
