The answer to this is very simple. There's only one book that you would need and it is Kathy & Bert's Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide. I'm also including the link to amazon where you can read some reviews and ofcourse buy the book.
Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide
Good luck.

Welcome to the ranch Anne, you may want to check out the bunkhouse here.
I recommend the K&B book, it is one of the best.

Hi Anne, welcome to the JavaRanch.
Here are the primary sources I used. They teach you more than is needed for the SCJP exam, but not more than is need for the real world.
The Java Programming Language, 3rd Edition, by Arnold, Gosling and Holmes
A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification: A Comprehensive Primer, 2nd Edition by Mughal and Rasmussen
Dan Chisholm's mock exams http://www.danchisholm.net/index.html
