An applet is a sort of javaGUI wich can be presented in a browser. The diffrens between an regular Application and an Applet is that there are no main method in an applet that the javacode begins to execute from. Instead the browser handle this. An applet has an init() function where the applets start.
A applet is a class which inherits from component. That's why you in an easy way can put images, buttons and other components to build a nice GUI. Applets are oftens used to preform interaction with the one using your Applet. Games , chats you name it.
I'm new to this myself but I think that you should by a good book to clearify yourself on this. Almost any biginner book in java covers Applets. If you don't know which book too buy try this URL
http://www.javaranch.com/books.jsp
The best way to get an answer is to try as hard as you can by yourself. Write some code with a help from a book. When your totally lost and don't know what to do. Post a message here. Try to be consis. Try posting many messages and try answer other javaranchers messages. Try getting it right but if you not totally clear about an answer, someother good rancher will come in and help you.
Hope this helps!
