The output for the following program says i=0,j=-1 can anybody explain the flow...

public class BreakTest
{
  public static void main(String[] args)
  {
    int i = 0, j = 5;
lab1:
    for( ; ; i++)  
    {
      for( ; ; --j)
      {
        if( i > j )
        {
          break lab1;
        }
      }
    }
    System.out.println(" i =" + i + " , j = " + j);
  }
}

It's a good idea with these problems to instrument the code a little by introducing some System.out.println statements, thus:

public class BreakTest
{
  public static void main(String[] args)
  {
    int i = 0, j = 5;
lab1:
    for( ; ; i++)  
    {
      for( ; ; --j)
      {
System.out.println("i =" + i + " ,
                           j = " + j); // Added this line
        if( i > j )
        {
          break lab1;
        }
        System.out.println("did not break out..."); // and this line
      }
    }
    System.out.println("Ended: i =" + i + " , j = " + j);
                  // modified slightly
  }
}  

The output is:

i =0 , j = 5
did not break out...
i =0 , j = 4
did not break out...
i =0 , j = 3
did not break out...
i =0 , j = 2
did not break out...
i =0 , j = 1
did not break out...
i =0 , j = 0
did not break out...
i =0 , j = -1
Ended: i =0 , j = -1
  

Is it clearer now what's happening?
