I got my SCJP 1.4 certification in Sept 2002, and it expires in Sept 2004, which next month. To keep my certification current I assume I need to take the upgrade certification. The only upgrade certification is 1.4, which what my certification is currently. Does anyone know when the 1.5 certification will be out? Also to stay certified do I have to take the 1.4 Upgrade?

Hi,

I think SCJP never expires, it is all upto you whether you want to upgrade for better oppurtunities in the job market or not.

the SCJP does expire. It say it on my Certificate, and my SCJP card. It is only good for 2 years.

Yes, that was once true, but I believe that the rules have changed. I think that if you get your certification right now, then it does not expire. If I remember correctly, Sun has changed their policy. Now they want to motivate people to come back to get a new certification for the most current version of Java. As long as Sun continues to update Java and the exam, then people will get recertified every two or three years; so there is no reason to put an expiration date on the certification.

Does anyone have any more information on this?

Take a look at the Recertification section in Sun's Certification FAQ.

Basically between September 2002 and August 2003, certifications were issued with an expiry date. Certifications outside that date range do not have an expiry date.

The good news is that you can write to Sun (details given in that link above) and ask for a replacement certificate without an expiry date free of charge.

Regards, Andrew

Thanks for the information Dan. My SCJP 1.4 certificate does have an expiration date on it (September 11, 2004 - 2 year from my test date), so I think I will go ahead an recertify on 1.4 again just to keep it current, and I hope what you are saying is true. To me that would make more sense than it randomly expiring after 2 years, and having to recertify on the same Platform. I have email Sun, so I am interested in their response as well. Nothing as of yet.

Dan, BTW your site was a big contributor to me passing the first go around. Thanks
