can lowering the security option in IE5.0 help us reading file using applet

if we decrease the security level of IE5.0,can we read file from disk by running applet this way.

No.. can't do that.
I am working on the same thing and haven't got it working yet.
The Applet will only run on the "sandbox" unless you have it signed or in the classpath. Both IE and Netscape do differnt things; but basically, you need to create both jar and cab file and with them "code signed". Then you may use the browser's security class and access machine.
If I found out more on this, I will let you know; but I am still working on it. And if anybody has done it before; please let me know the detail.
