First post; sorry if I posted in the wrong place.

I am an old C++ programmer and took a week long Java class. I bought the Java 2 certifcation book from Osborne and have spent the better part of two days looking at it.

I am curious as to how long some of you spent preparing to take the test.

Thanks,
Tim Rawerts

If you have been a experienced C++ programmer , then understanding Java should not be difficult. I would say atleast 2-3 months with regular study.

Thank you very much Jay. I was hoping you would say something like that. After three days of reading the Osborne, Sierra/Bates book I knew this wasn't going to be a weekend cram. I am really enjoying the book, and the really fun part is that it is like a game.
Thanks again. I plan on reading posts here regurlarly.

It was 3 months for me. About 2 hours every weekday. I used K&B as my source. I did ALL the questions in it, and coded absolutely every single thing that I doubted or was unclear on. That's a good idea.

Then I took the exams with the book, then took 3 of Marcus' exams. That was sufficient for preparation.

(I also went overboard by doing most of Dan's questions which are very in-depth, and read most of Mughal & Rasmussen too: quite a bit overkill)

I'll repeat. Read every word in K&B, do K&B's questions. And code at least 100 examples.

It took me also about 2 months, 3 to 5 hours per day. I read K&B book from cover to cover. I also took various mock exams.

You might want to wait to take the new Java 5 exam. I hear that it will be released later this Spring.

Check out Dibbo Khan's java exam taking experience

Based on guesstimation from above link and since you have been a C++ programmer and took a java class, You can probably buy the voucher now and take the exam early tomorrow. Be the first one by the door.

As for me, I think 1hr for 6 months is good enough. Exam is not my priority and I do not like cramming stuffs into my head ...

Thanks Kay. While it looks like I am too late, I still sent an email asking to be part of the study.

Tim,

I am just kidding about the first few statements. Luckily, it's too late Generally, I think self-study of any certs could take a few months. And also, it depends on your purpose to obtain the cert - just to pass or really learning them. I have did a cert in slightly less than 1 month and managed to pass due to the voucher promotional date expiration, but I've forgotten almost everything just after a month

Kay, I sent an email this morning, and received a response, and was able to take the survey. Thanks again for you input. If nothing else I am having a lot of fun with Java.

My goal is both to pass certification and understand the concepts. The second should lead to the first (I hope).
