The term "string literal" is used in two ways: 1. A source code syntactical element consisting of zero or more characters enclosed by " characters. 2. A String object in the string literal pool that is accessed by the byte code when the source program refers to a string literal.
The string literal pool is not in the stack, so it must be on the heap. The details are implementation-specific. [ March 24, 2005: Message edited by: Mike Gershman ]
