When they say 6-12 months of "experience," they basically mean "practice." In other words, it's a recommended amount of practical experience -- not necessarily work experience.

Technically, you don't need any experience at all to enroll for and take the exam. Practically, you would probably fare much better if you have some experience. As Marc pointed out, "experience" can mean "practice".

At the risk of getting flamed, here is my opinion on the exam.

You don't need any experience, save basic programming experience. You will need one copy of the Bates and Sierra book to study. If you have no Java experience, study it for about 3 months, take all the tests, samples, etc.

Look into other sources if it makes you feel better, but study the K&B book. The 5.0 version of the book is coming out this summer, in time for the new Tiger exam. I would wait for that.

I know your catch 22 situation. You don't need any experience to pass any of these tests, to this day I have no java experience besides what I have done at home. However I have alot of VB and C# programming experience. But by the time I had passed the SCJP, I hadn't yet begun programming in C#. So study the book hard for a month, and then take the practice tests and go for it. As a general rule I think the more serious or inquisitive or clever you are the less experience you need. So study hard and you should pass for sure.

Robert,
I'll second or third(?) or nth..the opinion
its nice to have experience... but thats what this forum is for.. for those who are still shaky and learning...
Get the Kathy/Bates book, and the book by Khalid Rasmussen.. do all the chapters and tests.. next do the mock exams diligently.
If you are like me, doing a day job which involves not 100% java - then 3-6 motnhs is good enough. Key is be regular, and take one bite at a time, and chew it well.Set a feasible deadline...and go for it.All the best!
