Personally, I'd say go for the JSE 5 exam rather than J2SE 1.4. I think it's more a matter of longevity of the exam (since JSE 6 isn't due out until summer 2006) and it shows you're up with the latest technology.

Same confusion here. SCJP 1.5 is new... I have seen people (here at javaranch.com itself) messing up to find proper/satisfying material for it. Won't it be good to score 2% more in scjp 1.4 than to lower down some percentage just out of a higher version craze??? Whether to go with an update or to go with better score in a step behind??? I have not been to 1.5 and I would like to know what is the major difference between the 1.5 and 1.4, which one would be easy to learn on basis of exam objectives? Any suggestions...
I reckon it depends on what you plan on doing - if you want to go for the Developer exam after then 1.4 is still a Qualification and you can progress on to what ever exam you choose after but if you want to be a programmer then i recommend the 5.0 exam as it show's you have up to date knowledge of the java language.
I agree. And, yes, it's tough to do really well right now on the 5.0 test with the limited material out there, but once you get it, it'll be more valuable than 1.4. Plus, it is certainly doable to switch from 1.4 to 5.0 in your studying. Just make sure you study guides like the one by MZ thoroughly. That was my mistake. I just read through it, but I didn't really shift my focus to it.
Or, you could wait til the 5.0 study books come out.
