Hi,

I am new to the forums. I have the SCJP Certification for the Java 2 Platform which I got about 5 years back.

I want to upgrade to the latest version. My thoughts were to upgrade to 1.4 but I see there is 1.5 available too.

Which one is better to upgrade to? Will I be missing out topics if I jump directly to 1.5?

Please advice.

The answer is simple. If you upgrade to 1.4 you will have to upgrade (in the future to 1.5). If you take 1.5 directly, you can take rest for a while until 1.6 comes.

I recommend taking 1.5. But in case you want to take SCJD, I think 1.4 would be sufficient.

Perhaps it is not quite as simple as that. Although passing the 1.5 exam will mean you can rest for a bit longer before considering an update. The problem at this moment is the 1.5 exam is very new and there is a shortage of materials to study from. Authors (including myself) are busily working on new material but as of now there is not a lot of exam specific material. One item to look out for is the tutorial by MZ (see previous posts in this forum)

If you give yourself a reasonable timespan for studying the new stuff may be out before you are ready to take the exam of course. On the other hand you might elect to take advantage of the huge amounts of 1.4 stuff already available.
