i m thinkin of giving SCJP exam, can sumbody tell me wat things should i b careful abt?
i already know java quite well through "The Complete Reference--Herbert Schildt" and have it.
I am also thinkin of buyin Mughals book.will i need another books?
I also have whizlabs SCJP 1.4, another simulator i guess i will get frm mughals book. Do i need anything else?
I have also alloted 1 complete month for preparation of this exam. Will this b enough?

any small bit of help is highly appreciated.

Preparing for Java in 1 month ?? I wish I could do it !! I have 1.5 years of work-ex on Java and still I've taken nearly 2 months thus far !!

The book you referred for Java so far,(Complete Reference) is the most kiddish of books available. I read it nearly 5-6 times and still feel I know only 10% of Java.

Try reading a few pages of Khalid Mughal. You'll know what Java actually means.

As for the exam simulators, Whizlabs simulators are good but you'll need more than that to practice. Try Googling.

Hi Amir,

Preparing for the exam in under a month is possible. I did it. I guess it depends on just how well you know Java. I had been coding in Java for about 5 + years before I did the exam. I got K&B's book (Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide), and did the prcatice exams, this showed up several areas that I didn't know so well, threading for example. I studied these areas (2 or 3) over a couple of weeks and then did the exam.

You will get a good idea of whether you are ready based on how well you do in the practice exams.

Personally I read in the quote a warning that the book was for beginners and that studying it doesn't give you 100 percent Java knowledge but much extra study was needed.

But I agree, if someone only takes 4 days to learn everything about Java and then only needs a couple of hours to pass the exam, great...

Hi Amir,

Just went through the posting to ur thread and i couldn't help giving my comments about it. I like ur attitude and i hope u clear SCJP in about a month. But it's all about acquiring knowlege, and in java it takes at least a year or more.


My suggestion would be to take it slow and there is nothing wrong in taking time to learn something...

On the exam point of view, try to take maximum no: of mocks and give imp to Threads,Collections and inner classes.

hi amir,
my intention is not like stopping you, you can really take the exam in a month, but once you get into it you may feel like you need more practising. also scjp1.5 has released and you can go for it instead of scjp1.4. its your wish anyway.
once you got your basics right, and you go through a book like Kathy sierra and bert bates or khalid mughal's then you can make it easily. what i would suggest is , take plenty of mocks for practice.
anyway,if you need any other stuff related to java you can ask me. i'll try to help you out.

firstly, thank-you shashikant for bringing that to my notice.So can somebody please post the difference between 1.4 and 1.5 . Also since , i could not find K & B ,i just have khalid's book ,so please tell me ,wat else do i need to cover 1.5.

In the 5.0 exam (same as 1.5, but Sun wants to call JDK 1.5 to 5.0 same as with exam. )

They added some new features of the JDK 5.0 release, including..

1) Generics
2) Enums
3) For Each Loop
4) Auto-boxing and Unboxing
5) Var-args
6) More OO principle stuff

There are no more bit shifting questions in 5.0

I think there is one or two I forgot.

I am preparing from the Kathy sierra book and it is very nice , it has the quizes along with the answers and explanation.

That is probably a topic for a new thread. The short answer is no, you just need to know the topics specified for the exam, and you need to know them well. Most people find the best way to learn is to write many many short programs (and then to compile them). I get a constant stream of feedback on my own site where people say "The code in question 78 (or whatever) won't compile". When I respond asking what error message they got, it turns out they haven't actually compiled it at all, they are just guessing. So my point is that javac is your friend and helper, compile compile compile. Good luck.
