Don't flash your dagger at my throat, no don't even design to make a lung at it, Its a question thats been haunting me since I started learning Java.

What the hell is foo?
we have foo() methods and foo fields and foo classes,
but hey, can anyone tell me how this thing came up?
what the hell is foo?

your patient answering will be duly appreciated and thanks for the restraint you have exercised!

Foo comes from foobar, which in turn comes from the acronym FUBAR, or Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition. (Substitute "Fouled" with your favorite expletive, if you wish.)

Most people don't think of the origins of the phrase, though. It's just "foo" now.

But I don't really think this is an SCJP question. My apologies to the moderator for perpetuating the thread.
