SCJP 1.4 Expire

Hi all,

I need some clarification..If we pass the SCJP 1.4 exam ...then how long will that be valid....

Will it expire after sometime and then we should go for upgrade exams...
And only the new ones will be valid...???

Is it that way???

The certification does not expire, but it is associated with a particular version. So "validity" is in the eye of the beholder. According to Sun...

Beginning with all Sun certification exams taken on or after August 1, 2003, certification offerings from Sun no longer have an expiration date. Rather, certification offerings are based on a version of technology... Recertification is no longer required to maintain one's status as a certified professional...

it is always good to get certified with the latest version???
or
there are some other factors for judging for interview???

i heard that we can use sun logo in our resumes , for only 2 years after completion of exam...is it true

Hello Mr.Marc Weber

I had made up my mind for giving SCJP 5.0 exam after going through the forum.
Earlier I was thinking about giving 1.4 version
but
now you have confused me totally to give which one???

I am a fresher and have learned JAVA recently and was looking for job but it was suggested to me that with certification it is much easier to get a job.
Now please guide me.

That was the rule before 2003. If you read the FAQ on java.sun.com you will find all the information you need on this.

It depends where you are looking for a job I guess.. But I'm sure you will get the job if you are qualified with either 1.4 or 5.
(But having SCJP doesn't mean you are a good java programmer only because of that..., but lots of companies hiring consultant require it)

I guess it is good to know both versions :-)
And if you start preparing now, you need to start with a 1.4 book anyway.

As Sara said, it depends a lot on where exactly you're looking for a job. If you're prepared for the 5.0 exam, then by all means take that one. But if you're prepared for 1.4 and really not ready for 5.0, then I would advise that you go for 1.4. My opinion is that it's more important to get certified (and perhaps move on to other exams) than to worry too much about versions.

Marc, thanks a ton for putting that link up. Was just what I was looking for.

Pramod, both Sara and Marc are absolutely right. Having a Java certification does not guarantee you a job...in my opinion, it's an excellent way to cement your basics, this definitely helps in clearing interviews and technical tests. Most companies have not yet switched on to Java 5.0, have read on earlier posts here that people generally wait for a major software release like 5.0 to stabilize before porting their systems on to something new.

See let me tell you my situation..............I'm from India
I have not yet started studying for the SCJP exam
So anyways I know I have to refer SCJP 1.4 books
What will be good for me to take SCJP1.4 or SCJP5.0 at this stage of my career when I'm just starting it???

I would go for SCJP 5.0

Thats what I'm doing myself. I think it is fun to learn the new topics, have to learn it someday anyway. We are not using 5.0 in my company yet, but most of the topics for 1.4 are also covered in 5.0. I did start reading for 1.4, but decided to go for the 5.0.

The 5.0 exam is a little bit more difficult than 1.4, and they focus more on analyzing code. It is not just to read a book and then you are ready.

Why don't you just make a choise and go for that
There are no answer to it,other than it depends.. you just have to decide..
The important thing is that you do what you have planned, and that you are able to make a choise. I guess that's more important for the intervjuers than which exam you do
